As it is Sugar Awareness Week at the moment, I wanted to recreate a popular favourite sweet treat for those of you who are looking to reduce your sugar intakes. Added sugar is of major concern in Public Health, due to the average population exceeding recommendations by over double!
Here I have put together a reduced sugar brownie recipe, using Natvia sweetener in combination with less sugar to provide you with some delicious brownies at only 5g sugar a piece (*unless you add caramel sauce).
Ingredients:
- 100g self-raising flour
- 45g cocoa powder / chocolate flavoured protein powder (no sugar)
- 1/2tsp baking powder
- 90g non-dairy butter
- 60g unsweetened soy yoghurt
- 100g Natvia sugar alternative
- 40g cane sugar
- 1tsp vanilla extract
- 125ml non-dairy milk
- 1-2tbsp coconut based salted caramel sauce (optional)
1. Preheat oven to 190C. In a bowl, beat the butter, yoghurt, sugar and vanilla until light and creamy.
2. In a separate bowl sift the flour, baking powder and cocoa. Slowly add this to the creamed butter mix whilst stirring. Gradually add in the milk.
3. Line a square baking tray with parchment, pour mixture into the pan. With a knife, swirl in the salted caramel sauce (if using).
4. Bake in the oven for approximately 50 minutes, until cooked. Remove and leave to cool before slicing.
